What is a Pterygium?

It is a triangular fold of conjunctiva invading the cornea from either side, within the interpalpebral fissure. It may be unilateral or bilateral. Usually present on the nasal side, may also occur on the temporal side. Usually seen in old age. In people doing outdoor work, especially men, more cases are reported.


                                 

What are the symptoms of Pterygium?

A formation of growth in the eye is the first thing that a person often notices. Apart from that the symptoms are-

·         Gritty/sandy feeling in the eye.

·         Foreign body sensation

·         Redness of the eye

·         Inflammation

·         Dryness due to reduced tear production

·         Blurring of vision

 

What are the causes of Pterygium?

 Prolonged exposure to the sun, UV rays, dry heat, wind, and dust.

 

What is Pterygium according to Ayurveda?

In Ayurveda, Pterygium can be compared with Arma, which is defined as the gradual spreading of the extra membrane in Shukla Mandala (mamsa vridhi).

There are 5 types of Arma: -

1.      Prasthari Arma

2.      Shukla Arma

3.      Kshataja Arma

4.      Adhimamsa Arma

5.      Snayu Arma

 

What are the common treatment line for Pterygium?

 Surgical excision is recommended for progressive type of Pterygium. In Ayurveda also, Arma Chedana/Surgical incision is mentioned.
