What is Dry Eye?

Dry eye is defined as a disorder of tear film due to tear deficiency, which causes damage to the ocular surface. It is a condition of the eye surface caused by underproduction of or changes in the lacrimal fluid. Advanced dry eye may damage the front surface of the eye and impair vision, causing your dry eye symptoms to worsen.

 

What is Dry eye according to Ayurveda?

Dry eye may be compared with Shushkaakshi Paaka, which, according to Acharya Susrutha, is Sarvagatha Roga(disease afflicting all parts of the eye), vitiation of Vata and Pitta Dosha Vataja, Aushada kritha(internal medication) and Sadhya (curable)Vyaadhi.

Causes of Dry Eye

1.     AQUEOUS TEAR DEFICIENCY: Also known as Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca, a condition in which the lacrimal glands fail to produce enough watery components of tears.

2.     EVAPORATIVE DRY EYE: This may result from inflammation of the Meibomian glands.

3.     OTHER CAUSES: Inflammation of the surface of the eyes, Blepharitis, environmental factors (dry room air, smoke, continuous exposure to computer screens), Sjogren's Syndrome, Vitamin A Deficiency.

 

Diagnosis of Dry Eye

·       Medical history

·       Tear film tests:

1.     Tear film break up time is a critical measure in diagnosing dry eye and assessing eye health.

2.     Schirmer 1 test

3.     Schirmer 2 test

4.     Vital staining with Rose Bengal

5.     Fluorescein staining is often used during an eye exam to assess the health of the eye surface.

 

Treatments for Dry Eye

·       Supplementation with artificial tears can significantly relieve dry eye symptoms.

·       Topical cyclosporine eye drops can be effective in treating dry eye symptoms.

·       Patients with continuous exposure to computer screens are advised to blink in regular intervals of time.

·       Eye exercises – 20-20-20 rule

 

Ayurveda Treatment for Dry Eye:

1.     ASCHOTHANA: Medicated drops are poured in to eyes from 2” height, the doctor will have to pen the eyes of the patient with his left hand and has to put the drops with his right hand. The medicine has to be kept in the eyes for 100 matra kalas; afterwards, eyes should be cleaned with mrudu sweda (Luke warm water) to ensure proper eye care.

2.     ANJANA: Application of medicine to the internal surface of lid margin with Anjana salaka. Some of the drugs used for Anjana are Shunti(dry ginger), Sthanya(breast milk), Haridra (turmeric), etc.

3.     GRITHAPANAM: Oral administration of Ghee

4.     NASYAM: Instillation of medicated oil/Kashaya into nose.

5.     SEKA: Medicine is poured on closed eyes continuously, from 4” height for a specific time, according to dosha, to help improve eye health.
